Hollywood actress Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill), who experiences a feeling of home in India, participated in recent Kumbh Mela, according to reports.
Mitchell’s next film project will reportedly explore India’s spirituality. She was reportedly awestruck by Red Fort in Delhi and undertook a road trip of India when she was about 19. Her Australian film “The Waiting City” was shot in India in the recent past.
Hindu statesman Rajan Zed has welcomed Mitchell’s interest in spirituality of India. But he urged Mitchell to seriously study the rich philosophical thought and spirituality which Hinduism offered so that her depiction of Hinduism was authentic. If Mitchell needed any assistance in her exploration of Hinduism, he or other Hindu scholars would be glad to share their knowledge, Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, added in a statement in Nevada (USA) today.
Born in Melbourne (Australia) as Radha Rani Amber Indigo Anunda Mitchell, she reportedly had a spiritually inclined upbringing in Hindu-Vaishnavite tradition by her parents, and is a vegetarian and practices yoga. Her Italian model mother reportedly became infatuated with India in the early 1970s. In her name, “Radha” means “Lord Krishna’s beloved”, “Rani” means “queen” and “Anunda” means “bliss”.

LA-based Australian actress Radha Mitchell is back home in Australia to launch a new Playstation movie download service, and visit family in Melbourne.
Mitchell, who’s starred in films such as Finding Neverland, Surrogates and Silent Hill, talked about her latest project, Australian film The Waiting City, which will be shown at the Sydney Film Festival in June and released in Australia in July.
She plans to come back for the July release.
Mitchell also spoke about her career and another recent movie, The Crazies. Mitchell has been based in the US for about 13 years but says it’s important to her to divide her time between both countries.
Q: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO PROMOTE THE pLAYSTATION MOVIE DOWNLOAD SERVICE?
A: I already have a Playstation. And I was kind of happy to know that three of my movies are on their playlist. And assuming that they’re going to be putting on more soon, kind of adds to their catalogue. Obviously I’m very happy to come home to be in Australia. I’m here for a few days then I’m going to be in Melbourne where my mum is. Any opportunity to hear the Australian accent and be with Australian people is always exciting for me.
Q: WHEN WILL YOU BE BACK IN AUSTRALIA?
A: I’m coming out again for the release of The Waiting City. I’m very excited about the release. That movie is very close to my heart. It’s a beautiful love story about a couple who go to India to adopt a baby, but in the process reconnect and fall in love again and rediscover what it is to be married. That’s a really beautiful story to tell. But I was also drawn to the story because it is about adoption and I think that’s a really important issue. And it’s wonderful to be able to explore it in context.

Q: THE WAITING CITY ALSO STARS FELLOW AUSSIES JOEL EDGERTON AND ISABEL LUCAS, WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WORK WITH THEM?

A: The movie co-stars with Joel Edgerton, Isabel Lucas and an Indian actor called Samrat Chakrabarti. It was a pretty amazing cast. And everyone was kind of great. I didn’t realise until we shot the film that Joel is also a really accomplished singer and guitar player and Samrat is an hilarious guy who has a dual persona, he works in Bollywood and in Hollywood. So it was kind of great to hang out with somebody who had that experience, and Isabel is a phenomenal actress and really beautiful and I am so looking forward to seeing more of her work.

Q: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR OTHER RECENT FILM THE CRAZIES? DO YOU KNOW IF IT WILL BE RELEASED HERE SOON?

A: I’m not sure what’s going on with it. I know for sure it’s going to be on Playstation 3. They’re very excited about it because it’s done very well in the US and it’s based on a George Romero movie. He’s a cult ’70s filmmaker from America who’s iconic in that he’s directed movies like Dawn of the Dead and he has a very strong and political message that’s part of all of his films. And this movie again has that.

Q: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR CAREER AT THE MOMENT?

A: I’m kind of excited now because there’s a movie that I’m co-producing with Jamie Hilton who’s one of the producers of The Waiting City. In working on The Waiting City I had an opportunity to executive produce it. So I was inspired to work on movies that I actually want to work on in terms of bringing those stories into the world. And that’s certainly something that I look forward to doing more of and I hope that’s part of my future. I feel quite comfortable with where I’m at and I’m happy with everything in terms of the acting side of it.

Q: MANY OF YOUR CHARACTERS ARE VICTIMS IN FILMS, DO YOU SEEK OUT THOSE SORT OF ROLES?

A: Certainly in The Crazies we’re a bunch of victims but we’re like victims with guns, victims on the run. If you see it you will know what I mean. It’s kind of cool. It’s kind of the every man story in a catastrophic situation. I would certainly say I look for the humanity in characters.

Q: WOULD YOU EVER COME BACK TO AUSTRALIA?

A: I do come back here. Even working on this thing is a great opportunity to come back and participate in something that’s going on here and making movies like The Waiting City is perfect in terms of projects for me because I get to tell Australian stories in a way that connects me to my own Australianess. It is difficult to live in two places but I certainly think it’s possible, so that’s kind of how I see it. I don’t think you necessarily have to chose. I think you can integrate all the parts of your life.

‘THE WAITING CITY’

THE WAITING CITY, a new Australian feature film by the exciting film-making team of director Claire McCarthy and producer Jamie Hilton, commenced shooting yesterday in Calcutta, India.

THE WAITING CITY is a mystic-infused love story that follows a young couple’s journey to India to collect their adopted baby.

The film stars Radha Mitchell (Finding Neverland, Pitch Black); recent AFI Award nominee Joel Edgerton (The Square, Star Wars: Episode II & III) and rising talent, Isabel Lucas (soon to be seen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen).

Speaking from India as the cameras started rolling, director Claire McCarthy said, “It’s an intimate, complex love story, set against the exhilarating, epic backdrop of Calcutta – a place that I’ve filmed in before and have a deep connection with. It’s impossible not to be effected by this place and certainly, the characters in The Waiting City are totally transformed by the people here and their powerful homeland.”

McCarthy’s previous credits include the documentary, Sisters (which screened on ABC Television this year and follows the experiences of her strong-willed real life sister, Helena, who naively nose-dives into volunteer work in Calcutta) and the feature film, Cross Life which screened at the 2007 Sydney Film Festival and Pusan International Film Festival in Korea.

Film producer, Jamie Hilton said, “We’ve got such an incredible team on this project. Not only do we have three of Australia’s most exciting on-screen talents in the lead roles, but many in our crew are internationally acclaimed. Collectively, we have two Aussie Academy Award nominees in our team – Paul ‘Salty’ Brincat (Best Sound, The Thin Red Line) and Veronika Jenet (Best Editing, The Piano), and an Oscar winner – Paul Pattison (Best Make-up, Braveheart) plus Claire will continue her close working collaboration with AFI Award-winning cinematographer, Denson Baker ACS (The Black Balloon).”

“We’re confident that this film will be an Australian story, but an International film. It’s not often that audiences get to see an English-language love story in a beautiful place like India and it is very exciting to be the first Australian feature film to be entirely shot here,” said Hilton.

The Indian production team is headed by Harish Armin of Speaking Tree, whose credits include Wes Anderson’s Darjeeling Limited (production manager) and Mira Nair’s The Namesake (production supervisor). He was also line producer for one of the year’s most highly anticipated Bollywood blockbusters, Ghajini.

THE WAITING CITY will be released in Australia by Hopscotch Films and has been picked up for international sales by Mark Horowitz at H20 Motion Pictures.

THE WAITING CITY was developed in association with the former Australian Film Commission’s INDIVISION program and was financed by Screen Australia, the new Producer Offset, Spectrum Films, Efilm, Exodus and the NSW Film and Television Office.

THE WAITING CITY is expected in cinemas nationally late 2009.
